Ground Up
This project aims to raise college students' awareness about the groundwater depletion issue in the San Joaquin Valley, educate them on the water cycle, and encourage actions towards the groundwater crisis through data visualization.

CONTEXT
San Joaquin Valley Groundwater
San Joaquin Valley in California is facing a severe groundwater depletion problem due to excessive pumping, causing land subsidence, reduced water availability, and environmental degradation.
IDEATION
Narrow Down
Through conversation with a guest from NASA JPL, we learned about groundwater issue and there is lack of awareness within people. I started off by asking myself "why people care" to find a message to convey and found out that there is disparity of water use between locals and agriculture through research. And if we don't take actions, this groundwater issue can lead to lack of water in the area.
INTERACTION
Water Bottles
Individuals who are conscious of the environment often carry water bottles, so we selected a water bottle as the medium for interacting with digital information. We've targeted college students in the region for this initiative.
VISUALIZATION
Water Level & Disparity
-
Highlighted the disparity of water use between locals and agriculture with the scale of the almond (major crops in the region) and the water bottle
-
Animated the water level to visualize the amount of change of groundwater over time based on the "groundwater data" and "precipitation data".

Reflection
-
Learned that creating narratives with impact I want to create in mind plays a critical role in data visualization.
-
Learned the process of letting the narrative guide how persona interacts with data and how and what data to visualize.
VISUALIZATION
Precipitation
-
Ellen and I visualized precipitation in each year using p5.js and a precipitation data file(csv).
-
This animation goes from 2012 to 2020. It's corresponded to the animation of water level.
VISUALIZATION
Datasets
For the animations on the screen, we used this datasets.
